Minneapolis VA Health Care System

The Project

A secure outdoor recreation area was designed for the Minneapolis VA Health Care System. The space was developed to assist psychiatric inpatients recovering from mental illness including many veterans returning from deployments dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Designed elements to assist in patient treatment within the space included a walking loop with areas for passive reflection and activities. The use of plantings and hardscapes with varying textures, fragrance and color supported treatment methods and reduced recovery time. Activity spaces included a basketball court, open lawn for exercise and meditation and an open patio with seating for staff and patients.
